The Introduction

from The Blackwell Letters, a novel by Jennifer Davis

I have no intention of explaining how the following correspondence fell into my hand. I felt them too useful not to share and too potent to reveal my sources.

It seems there are two errors that humankind can easily fall into, as C.S. Lewis proposed in his inspiring The Screwtape Letters.

One error is believing too much in devils: that there are demons everywhere, ready to spring up, that demand excessive and obsessive attention.

The second error is in not believing in them enough. That the demons of scripture are misdiagnosed mental illness or the superstitions of a time before modern scientific inquiries. As these letters show, Satan loves both extremes and works off those stereotypes to keep us in noise and chaos.

Readers should remember that the devil is a liar. In fact, he is the father of lies. I can imagine him hissing the lies that we tell ourselves and each other. As follows, some of what is exclaimed with confidence in the following letters may be right. Some may be wrong. Some may sound right, but are misleading or are twisted in a way to dilute the impact. Truth with a twist, if you will. It is for you, dear reader, to prayerfully judge for yourself with your faith community. To aid your discernment, there is a Discussion Guide provided that covers the topics in these letters.

A list of resources also appears in the back of this anthology. Sadly, it seems that demons are prone to plagiarism, so the content of the letters has been thoroughly researched and themes and ideas attributed to the best of my ability.

I encourage further reading and study, as these letters only scratch the surface of what can be known about spiritual warfare. Most of it isn’t as tidy as the demonic author of these letters, Dredmira Blackwell, chose to address in her correspondence. Perhaps she was deploying a gentlelady’s sensibility. Perhaps she knew the letters might be leaked (as a self-promotion) and there were secrets too powerful to reveal.

This collection is dedicated to every young person finding their way through the thicket of this world, despite the opposition, to their eternal creator who loves them and is for them!
